From the consumers’ point of view, the energy labeling program offers significant benefits to the consumers. It enables consumers to reduce their monthly energy bills while using Air conditioners and provides information on energy use.
| |
The objective of this program, as set out by B.E.E (Bureau of Energy Efficiency, Govt. of India) is efficient use of energy and its conservation. With increasing gap between energy demand and supply situation in India, the labeling program is the ‘least-cost’ option to the government.

Purpose of the Energy Rating
| |
India Room Air conditioner Industry has approximately 38 brands of Air conditioners as of March 2010. Before the labeling program was introduced, the consumers could not easily get information on and understand the energy consumption details from the name plate information of Air conditioners.
There is a wide variation in energy consumption of different makes of Air conditioners. This led to the continuous availability of inefficient Air conditioners in the market and purchase by consumers, leading to waste of precious and costly energy.
The energy labeling program sets out to correct this situation in the India Air conditioner market. Minimum efficiency performance standards have been prescribed by BEE and the appliances are rated on the basis of energy efficiency indicated by suitable number of stars on the name plate label.
The no. of stars can vary from 1 to 5. Higher stars indicate higher energy efficiency and more energy bill savings for the customers.
